Below is an outline of tests that a firefighter candidates may have to complete in a recruitment process. Depending on which municipality or organization you apply for will depend on which tests you may complete to be fully qualified. Please note: The following information is an overview and may not represent the test exactly. Confirm with the hiring employer of their process.
Standardized Tests

The firefighter physical fitness test is a comprehensive assessment designed to evaluate a candidate’s physical fitness and ability to perform the essential duties of a firefighter. The U of A has a open registration for you to book your test that fits your schedule.
You must pass all tests in order to successfully complete the overall evaluation. All of the tests are completed while wearing firefighting personal protective equipment (PPE) that weighs approximately 23 kg (51 lb), depending on size.
Once registered for the test you will receive additional instructions.
The firefighter aptitude test is a standardized assessment designed to evaluate a candidate’s cognitive and behavioral attributes that are essential for the role of a firefighter. The test typically consists of the following components:
Reading Comprehension: Candidates are assessed for their ability to read and comprehend written materials related to firefighting scenarios, equipment, and procedures.
Mathematical Reasoning: This component evaluates a candidate’s ability to perform basic arithmetic, algebra, and geometry to solve problems commonly encountered in firefighting situations.
Situational Judgment: This component assesses a candidate’s ability to evaluate different firefighting scenarios and make appropriate decisions based on the information provided.
Mechanical Reasoning: Candidates are assessed for their ability to understand basic mechanical principles and their application to firefighting equipment and tools.
Personality and Behavioral Traits: This component of the test measures a candidate’s personality and behavioral traits, including their interpersonal skills, work ethic, integrity, and emotional stability.
The firefighter aptitude test is administered online in a proctored timed and standardized format. The test is used to identify candidates with the cognitive and behavioral attributes that are essential for success as a firefighter.
Candidates will be tested based on their certification level: Advanced Care Paramedic, Primary Care Paramedic, Emergency Medical Responder, First Medical Responder.
The medical knowledge test is an assessment designed to evaluate a candidate’s understanding of medical concepts and practices.
The medical knowledge test is administered in a timed and standardized format. There is a written, verbal and practical component to the testing. The test is used to identify candidates with the medical knowledge and understanding required for emergency medical services.
A firefighter confined space assessment is an evaluation of a firefighter’s ability to safely enter and rescue individuals from confined dark spaces.
Ropes and Knots: Ropes and knots are used in various settings, such as rescue operations, to secure objects or to create a system for ascending or descending. A ropes and knots component of an assessment evaluates an individual’s ability to tie different types of knots, properly use ropes and cords to secure objects or create an anchor, and perform other rope-based tasks commonly used in rescue operations.
Ladder Component: The ladder component of an assessment involves the evaluation of an individual’s ability to safely and effectively use a ladder in a variety of settings. The assessment includes tasks such as safely ascending and descending a ladder, using the proper techniques for extending or retracting a ladder, and securing a ladder in place to prevent movement or collapse.
